5 Tips To Improve Your Mental Health

Mental health is important as it helps you be physically healthy, cope with stressors, build relationships, overcome challenges and realise your potential. In this blog post, we provide 5 ways to improve your mental health.

1. Look after your Physical Health

Studies have shown exercise and eating healthy can help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. This does not mean you have to go to the gym, there are other options for exercise you can do. For example, going for a walk outside, dancing or yoga.

2. Have a Good Support Network

Humans are naturally social creatures, which makes us desire connections with others. When we form these connections, our emotional needs are met. Therefore, it helps to surround yourself with a positive support network. It can also relieve stress talking to a friend, family member or counsellor about your problems.

3. Self-care

It is important for your mental health to take time out for yourself. Find activities that bring you joy. This could be anything from reading, to watching a movie, taking a hot bath, listening to or playing music, meditation, the list is endless.

4. Identify your Strengths

Studies have shown identifying your strengths can help you develop a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. This could include thinking about things you have achieved, asking a loved one what they think your strengths are, writing in a journal daily about activities you enjoy doing and why you enjoy them.

5. Limit Social Media Use

Studies have shown too much social media can negatively affect your mental health. However, this does not mean you have to stop using it completely. Instead, you could put your phone in a different room while you are eating dinner or spending time with family or friends. Or you can choose to not use your phone half an hour before bed.
