The Age And Disability Paradox – Why Seniors Are More Likely To Be Disabled, Yet Remain In The Workforce

The percentage of seniors in the workforce is on the rise, even as their disability rates increase. So why are more and more seniors staying in the workforce despite having disabilities? To answer that question, we need to take a closer look at the age and disability paradox.

It’s no secret that as we age, our bodies start to break down. We become more susceptible to chronic illnesses and injuries, and our abilities to recover from them diminish. At the same time, many of us are living longer thanks to advances in medical care and technology. As a result, seniors are increasingly likely to experience one or more chronic health conditions.

The most common chronic health conditions among seniors are arthritis, heart disease, stroke, cancer, and diabetes. These conditions can lead to disability, making it difficult or impossible for seniors to continue working.

So why are more seniors remaining in the workforce despite having disabilities? For many, it’s simply a matter of necessity. With the cost of living on the rise and Social Security benefits failing to keep pace, seniors are increasingly turning to work as a way to make ends meet.

Others are motivated by a desire to stay active and engaged in the workforce. Seniors who continue working often find that their jobs give them a sense of purpose and fulfillment. And, as we age, our jobs can provide us with important social connections that might otherwise be lost.

Of course, not everyone is able to continue working into their senior years. For some, their health conditions simply make it too difficult. Others may have family responsibilities that prevent them from working full-time. But for those who are able, the age and disability paradox doesn’t have to be a barrier to a fulfilling and productive later life.
